FROM THE PASTOR'S DESK by Jim Hearn JESUS SAID: “GO YE AND MAKE DISCIPLES OF ALL NATIONS”. YET, WE HAVE TROUBLE EVEN MAKING DISCIPLES IN OUR OWN LOCAL AREA. SEVERAL YEARS AGO, A YOUNG MAN AND HIS WIFE QUITE SUCCESSFUL CAREERS TO BECOME MISSIONARIES TO SOUTH AMERICA. WHEN ASKED WHY THEY WOULD LEAVE FAMILY, FRIENDS, AND THE COMFORTS OF HOME FOR A PAGAN COUNTRY, WAS HARD TO UNDERSTAND. THEIR REPLY WAS, “SOMEONE TOLD US OF JESUS’ LOVE FOR US AND THIS CHANGED OUR LIVES FOREVER”. “WE WANT TO GO AND TELL OTHERS ABOUT JESUS’ LOVE FOR THEM IN HOPES IT WILL CHANGE THEIR LIVES AS WELL”. WHAT IF EACH OF US WOULD TRY TO REACH OUT TO OTHERS AND TELL THEM ABOUT JESUS’ LOVE. WHAT A DIFFERENCE IT WOULD MAKE NOT ONLY TO THE ONES BEING TOLD, BUT ALSO TO THE ONE TELLING. BY BECOMING A DISCIPLE OF JESUS AND MAKING OTHER DISCIPLES, WE COULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THIS WORLD. GO! MAKE DISCIPLES! A Valentine Wrapped With Love by Sylvia Orr The sweet smell of love is in the February air. Love stories are being told, and love songs are being sung. The scent of sweet treats and confections are inviting. Love-me-tender-moments are being shared and recorded in diaries. One of the most beautiful love stories is recorded in the Bible. In the book of Ruth, we read about Ruth and Boaz. They exhibit notable qualities that exemplify Christian love. Look at Ruth . After Her husband, Elimelech, died , instead of wallowing in self -pity she had a heart of love. She willingly left her country of Moab- to willingly voyage to a strange land with her Mother-in-law, Naomi. After arriving in Naomi’s home town of Bethlehem, Ruth diligently worked in the fields to provide food for herself and Naomi. During the days that followed Ruth was not only a trustworthy and grateful servant in the fields, she set an example for others. Boaz: Rich-financially and spiritually. He exercised tenderness and a spirit of giving-always caring for others. Faithfulness was one of his strong traits. He was faithful to his word and believed faithfully upon God's word. Boaz was a man of honor and above board with his business and personal dealings. Also, we see how Naomi, who loved Ruth like her own daughter, used skillful wisdom to help guide Ruth to a future of happiness. In the book of Corinthians we read :Love is patient, Love is kind...It always protects, always trust, always hopes, always preservers,. Love never fails. Love endures all things. We may not be Ruth and Boaz-but , maybe we can make history by one simple act of loving kindness. Here are some fun suggestions to show kindness. Don't forget to wrap them with love. 1. Carve you and your husband’s initials on a tree in your yard. Ladies, don't be surprised if that special guy takes you by the hand and sings.. "Come Along With Me To The Sweetheart Tree". 2. Make a heart-shaped cake for a shut-in 3. Write your own Valentine cards and distribute them to nursing homes. 4. Plan a party for a underprivileged children Include a Valentine Hunt game. 5. Take an elderly person to visit a family grave. 6. Donate blood 7. Plan a picnic for your Sunday School class 8. Make Valentine cookies for the homeless . 9. Take a Valentine Survey -ask everyone to name someone that has a "big heart". 10.Write a love story or read a love story to someone. Tell what Jesus has done for you.	11. Gather a group of friends and go Valentine Caroling. There are hundreds of love songs suitable for all ages. 12. Purchase a Bible for someone. RECIPE OF THE MONTH PAULA DEANS’ MAMMA’S POUND CAKE 3 cups plain flour 3 cups sugar 2 sticks of butter ½ cup Crisco ½ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon baking powder 5 large eggs 1 cup of milk 1 teaspoon of vanilla flavoring Pre-heat oven to 325 degrees Sift flour, salt, and baking powder. Mix softened butter and Crisco until creamy. Add sugar a little at a time. Add eggs (room temp) one at a time mixing well. To this mixture, add flour and milk alternately beginning with flour and ending with flour. Add vanilla flavoring and continue to mix until well blended. Pour into a well-greased and floured tube pan and bake for 1 hour and thirty minutes.	JOKE OF THE MONTH A mother went to wake her son for church one Sunday morning. When she knocked on his door, he said, I’m not going!” “Why not?” asked his mother. “I’ll give you two good reasons”, he said. “One, they don’t like me. Two, I don’t like them.” His mother replied, “I will give you two good reasons why YOU WILL go to church. One, you’re 47 years old.
